A floral-themed “Happy Secretary’s Day” graphic in soft pinks and purples celebrates staff at Pauls Valley Junior High. Thanks to a PVJH Foundation grant, our 8th grade students explored the powerful novel Refugee by Alan Gratz and brought their learning to life through creative projects that reflect courage, resilience, and hope. These pieces show not only their understanding of the refugee experience—but also their empathy and heart. We’re so proud of the meaningful work happening at PVJH and grateful for the support that makes it possible!

A celebratory collage on a black background with gold confetti accents highlights student work from a PVJH Foundation grant project titled “Understanding the Refugee Experience: PVJH Foundation Grant by Tonya Tobey.” Surrounding the title are colorful posters created by eighth-grade students, featuring poems, drawings, maps, and symbols representing themes of hope, displacement, and resilience. At the center is a display of many small student pieces arranged around a world map. Text at the bottom explains that the grant funded class sets of novels, and students read Refugee by Alan Gratz, which tells the stories of three young people fleeing their home countries in search of safety.
